Mode of Study

Part-Time Day

This study-unit will introduce nursing students to advanced nursing skills which are related to the parenteral administration of medication,fluids and blood components. Students will be able to develop these skills through a theoretical introduction followed by practical sessions in a simulated environment in the clinical labs.

Topics that will be discussed include:

  • Principles of intravenous treatment administration;
  • Infection prevention and control related to IV care;
  • intermittent and continuous intravenous medications and fluid administration (bolus, infusion, volumetric, syrginge);
  • demonstrate the ability to calculate drug dosages;
  • Care of central venous access devices;
  • Administration of otal Parenteral Nutrition;
  • Transfusion of blood and blood products;
  • Administration of chemotherapy;
  • Care of the patient with a peripheral venous cannula;
  • Blood Cultures; and
  • Phlebotomy and peripheral venous cannulation.

Study-unit Aims

The main aim of this study-unit is to enable the student to perform advanced nursing skills related to intravenous therapy under the direct supervision of a qualified clinical skills instructor.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of intravenous treatment administration;
  • Discuss the care of a patient with central and peripheral venous lines;
  • Highlight infection prevention and control risks related to IV care and IV drug administration, and discuss measures to mitigate such risks;
  • Describe the signs & symptoms, and discuss the assessment & management of a patient with an anaphylactic response to IV therapy;
  • Describe and discuss the procedure of safe intermittent / continuous intravenous medication and fluid administration;
  • Describe and discuss the procedure for safe administration of blood products and chemotherapy;
  • Discuss the procedures that are required to ensure patient safety during and after IV therapy.

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to, and what to look for, when assessing the site of insertion of a central / peripheral IV line;
  • Calculate drug dosages and rates of IV drug administration from given dilutions or concentrations, patient weight, and duration of administration;
  • Demonstrate the administration of IV medications / fluids / blood products, using the bolus, infusion, volumetric-pump, syringe-driver-pump methods as appropriate;
  • Demonstrate the procedures of phlebotomy and peripheral venous cannulation on a simulation manikin.
